Term two is about undertaking all your primary research. You will have a good foundation on your project based on term ones secondary research and you will by now have a research strategy to capture the data you require for your design. You now want to get on with it. The data you gather should impact on and influence the design decisions you make. Why you are taking a particular approach? Why have you made a specific design decision?
Outcome no. As a result of studying this module, you will be able to:
4. Develop systematic application of advanced research and design methods
Create innovative and original solutions to complex and challenging design problems
Demonstrate a comprehensive and critical understanding of techniques applicable to your own advanced design scholarship
Demonstrate self-direction, initiative, professionalism and personal responsibility for your own design scholarship
1 Specification report: (statement of research and design deliverables)
Brief introduction and explanation remind us what you are doing and indentify any changes that may have taken please.
Aim and objectives of the project.
Summary of research: explore and outline the research that you have undertaken and the results that you have obtained. Please focus on how these results will impact on the design decision you make?
Outline and indentify research still in progress with an indication of expected completion dates.
Risk assessment: identify and explain any problems you are having with your research and what you intend to do about it?
a ‘client ready’ conceptual design package for your design presentation.
Presentation plan (see below) explain how are you intending to present your work at the end of term 2 and at the end of term 3. Remember it does not have to be PowerPoint. In principle you could do anything you want. Be adventurous radical and at the same time realistic. What equipment space materials would you need?
Identify and list all drawings, visual materials (eg mood boards, sample boards) that you will present at this stage. The expectation is that it would include zoned plans, general arrangements, conceptual visuals, and any additional material that you require to present to a client. Identify a hierarchy for these drawings / visuals which are an absolute requirement and therefore should be done first, which are helpful but not vital. Which would be nice if you have time?
Provide a preliminary list of all drawings and visual materials. By this stage you should have a fully completed design outcome for your project that includes all levels of drawing and visualisation from first principles to detailed design development drawing of key components, as well as appropriate visualisation material. Identify a hierarchy for these drawings / visuals which are an absolute requirement and therefore should be done first, which are helpful but not vital. Which would be nice if you have time? The expectation is that you will spend 80% of your time in term 3 developing your design work and 20% on your final written report.
Create a gannt chart/s action plan. Plan your workload in detail from beginning of term two through to end of term three. Write a short explanation of any foreseeable problems and how you will address them.
2 Presentation required at end of term 2
You will undertake a presentation that will last 15 mins plus questions. Your objective is to present your design concepts to client concept stage. The expectation is that you will explain your design through the drawings and other visual materials outlined in your list of above. You should present a very professional explanation of your project including the research outcomes as relevant to the design decisions you have made. Note we do not want you to repeat all the aims objectives research methodology results etc again. Focus on your design. Yes we will need a short introduction and explanation but this should be about your design not about the research. You need sufficient background materials to explain to an audience who do not know what you are doing what your project is about but don’t spend more than 5 min absolute max on this part.
