Imagine yourself the artistic director of a theatre or performance venue of your choice in the location of your choice (please specify the nature of each) with a potentially unlimited budget to mount a season of FOUR plays from the second half of the semester. The first three should be drawn from each of the following periods: 1) Medieval Europe or Tokugawa Japan; 2) English or Spanish Renaissance; 3) Neoclassical French or English Restoration. None of the three may be plays on which you led discussion. The fourth play must be Goethe’s Faust, Part I. The purpose of the essay is to justify your season. You need to be both general and specific. Consider the kinds of issues that are most meaningful to you as a theatre artist/scholar and the audience of your chosen locale and performance venue. Explain each of your four choices in terms of how that particular play, on its own and in combination with the other three, can convey your vision to that particular audience in that particular time and place. To secure your funding, you will need to present a sample scene from each play to a panel of judges. The sample scene will need to encapsulate and illustrate the play’s place in your season and vision. Thus your discussion of each play should include a brief but specific analysis of that sample scene—why you chose it, what its key dynamics are, how you would stage it and direct the actors to play it, the type of theatrical style it represents. In your discussion of Goethe’s Faust, you should also explain how that play culminates your season and, indeed, how it synthesizes our work in the course.
