Topic: For this synthesis paper, I would like you to explore the ideas of the four theorists we have encountered so far in the course ? Aristotle, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Miller ? as lenses through which you can examine the nature of tragedy in Anna in the Tropics. In other words and simply, what would any each of these theorists say about the nature of tragedy in the play? The Writing Process: Brainstorm. Each of the theorists poses a view of tragedy that then could be applied to the film or a play. Aristotle focuses on the tragic hero who has offended the laws of the cosmos, while Hegel argues that tragedy lies within a collision of ?two goods.? This collision results in the destruction of both heroes but from that there is a synthesis, a change in the characters affected by the tragedy. Nietzsche see tragedy reflected in the essential nature of man in a collision between the Dionysian / irrational side versus the Apollonian / rational side. These forces can be represented by individuals or within the consciousness of one person. Miller argues the tragedy is within the grasp of the ?common man? who fights for ?personal dignity? in a society that attempts to strip him / her of that. How would any one of them criticize or praise the one work you have selected? See my PowerPoint lecture and other handouts Plan. Prepare an outline of your ideas. THIS IS REQUIRED AND MUST BE PASSED INTO ME BEFORE YOU PASS IN THE ESSAY OR YOU WILL LOSE POINTS. You don?t have to follow any specific outline model. Do not worry about numerals and letters and what goes where. I would like to see a thesis, plus main supporting ideas clearly, plus whatever details you deem appropriate. Support: YOU MUST QUOTE THE PLAY IN EACH PARAGRAPH OF THE BODY OF THE ESSAY. IN ADDTION, YOU MUST ALSO HAVE ONE FOR EACH OF THREE THEORISTS: HEGEL, NIETZSCHE AND MILLLER [YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CITE ARISTOTLE. IN-TEXT CITATIONS AND WORKS CITED: For each theorist you must use MY COURSE POWERPOINT IN COURSE DOCUMENTS. The abbreviation ?qtd. in? is used to indicate that that particular quote is from a source other than the theorist himslef: for example (Hegel qtd in Aiello slide #). For the Works Cited, go to our library?s website?see MLA Guide ?Citing a digital file? for my course PowerPoint. For each quote from Anna in the Tropics cite as you did for Fences. For in-text citations use author and page number. Go to our library?s website?see MLA Guide ?Books ? print? for Works Cited. YOU SHOULD HAVE TWO SOURCES IN YOUR WORKS CITED. Exactness of your citations, how they are introduced into your text, as well as your Works Cited are very important to your grade. Writing Goals for this paper are as follows: 1. An organized and structured argument. 2. More focused and interesting introductions and conclusions. 3. The integration of quoted sources and correctness in their citations.
