There will likely be problems and conflict encountered at one time or another throughout the duration of a group. As we group leaders we must be prepared to handle and address conflicts accordingly and to ensure that group conflict does not hinder the productivity and effectiveness of the group and its members. When leading groups many of the group members will be significantly diverse, they can be culturally, and socially diverse, this diversity can bring upon different views, experiences, and opinions. Some of these views being problematic to the group causing conflict and resistance, as group leaders we must be capable of reframing resistance, while providing examples of how to work therapeutically with defensive behaviors exhibited by group members (Corey, 2014). They key for the group to remain productive, problems will be encountered, but they should not be over looked, but should be expressed and further worked through. Some issues can be worked through by suggesting the group member recollect the adverse experiences, express feelings and further draw from the experience implementing necessary intervention. It is important that the group establishes a sense of trust among all group members, this allows the group members to express themselves more efficiently and freely. The video Groups in Action (2014), the Coreys ‘ do well handling the various conflicts that had quickly began to emerge. Some group members expressed their lack of desire to participate, there were cultural diversity issues, fearfulness of expressing emotions, as well as concerns about the leaders’ lack of disclosure. The group leaders worked through the conflict by paying close attention to and addressing feelings, dissecting past experiences, and challenging members to overcome in their own way.
