discussing one of the 15 emerging conservation issues identified in Sutherland et al. 2013.
Trends in Ecology & Evolution 28(1). The first section of the paper should include a narrative of
the importance of your chosen issue to conservation of the natural world. Then, you should
describe specific research that has been done to understand the issue and its impacts. This
section should include a level of technical detail suitable for someone who has taken a basic
college-level science course (see the Tuesday NY Times Science section for examples of this
type of writing). You need to have substantial content on what particular ecosystems, habitats,
and/or species are likely to be affected by your issue. Finally, your paper should address the
limitations of these studies, and provide recommendations for future efforts to address the
issue. This last section should incorporate your own perspective, drawing on the knowledge that
you have gained in this course.
Each week during the semester, you are also expected to produce one blog posting that
discusses your issue. Blogs can be created on wordpress.com. These discussions should be
based on scientific articles that you are reading or other informative sources. These blog
postings may serve as rough drafts of sections of your paper.

For the paper, you are required to have AT LEAST 8 APPROPRIATE CITATIONS for your
project. Appropriate citations are scientific journal articles. Websites (esp. Wikipedia),
magazines, newspapers, etc. may be used for background research, but do not replace the
scientific articles. Excellent resources for finding journal articles are Google Scholar
(http://scholar.google.com/) or Web of Science. To use Web of Science, you must be on the
Baruch network. Go to the Newman library website (http://newman.baruch.cuny.edu/), click on
the “Find a Database” tab in the bottom left, and type in Web of Science. You will also need to
be on the Baruch network to download PDF articles from journals that Baruch pays for. It is
possible to do this work off-campus if you log in to the network through the library’s website.
Ask the helpdesk or a librarian if you need help.
The journal articles that you use for your paper must be cited both IN-TEXT as (Author, Year),
and as a full citation at the end of the paper in the following format:
Author Last Name, First Initial. Year. “Article Title”. Journal Name Volume (Issue): Page Nos.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade on this assignment. I will be
using the “Turn-it-in” software available to faculty to root out copying from other sources. You
should paraphrase, with appropriate citation, when using information from the journal articles
that you find. DO NOT USE DIRECT QUOTES IN PARENTHESES. This paper should be
your own synthesis of information gained from reading the primary scientific literature
